Weight loss Secrets Guide

We all knew when watching “The Biggest Loser” that excessive exercise and a carefully controlled diet would not be sustainable for long term weight loss or maintenance. Who has the time to exercise 8 hours a day, count every calorie eaten and burned off, and still have time for the rest of your life.

Dr. Kevin Hall from the National Institutes of Health decided to follow contestants from Season 8 of “The Biggest Loser” for six years to see what happens to people after an extreme program of dieting and exercise. We might have guessed that the contestants might fall back to old bad habits or lack the will power to maintain these intensive lifestyle changes. However, the study results suggest that it’s a matter of unexpected biology. The metabolism of contestants declined by the end of the competition (as expected), but the rate of metabolism was much lower than expected at the six year mark.

It’s well known that the body’s metabolism slows down with age. However, this study suggests that extreme dieting and exercising results in a double whammy! Your metabolism slows naturally due to aging and then slows even more, apparently due to the method of weight loss. The end result. It’s even hard to maintain or lose weight. In fact, 13 of the 14 contestants in the study gained weight after 6 years. Even sadder, 4 contestants ended up weighing more than they did when the entered “The Biggest Loser” competition.

That doesn’t mean it’s time to throw in the towel and give up on your weight loss goals. Instead, it means we need to be smart when designing a personal plan for weight loss and health!

Don’t Focus on Unrealistic Goals

Don’t set yourself up for failure by creating unrealistic fitness and health goals. If you’ve never run more than a mile, deciding to run a half-marathon next month would be a tough goal to achieve. Instead of creating one, big, hard to reach goal, create small goals to keep you motivated and feeling successful.
